Tiwi Island Sculpture

Tiwi Island Sculpture with great presence

Object type: Tiwi Sculpture of Purukaparli

Locality: Tiwi Islands Northern Territory Australia

Artist: Unknown

Circa: Late 1970 early 1980’s

Length: 89 cm

Description:

This sculpture has a really strong presence. I am not sure if it is the lack of a mouth or the eyes but it has that feeling that it is watching you as much as you are watching it.  Made of ironwood with the pigments in very good condition.

The sculpture represents Purukaparli and is associated with the first death and funeral rights.

The myth of Purukaparli and Bima is not just a narrative of creation but a representation of Tiwi values. It highlights the importance of balance in relationships, the role of spiritual figures in guiding human behavior, and the deep connection between the people and the land. The story also emphasizes the need for respect for the wisdom of elders and the lessons they pass down, as well as the constant interaction between the spiritual and physical realms.

Comes on a custom wooden stand

Price: $4500 AUD
