Coranderrk Aboriginal Shield Artwork
Rare example of an early Artwork from Coranderrk misssion
Object type: Sculpture
Locality: Coranderrk Victoria Australia
Artist: Unknown
Circa: 1880’s
Length: 74 cm
Description: While some collectors will be disappointed this artwork is not a weapon a more discerning collector will recognise this as an opportunity. It has the traditional beauty of an old shield without the stigma and restrictions of being an old shield.
The first Aboriginal Art movement in Australia was making traditional artefacts for sale at Coranderrk and similar missions in Victoria. These were not weapons but curio’s made to sell to Europeans on their grand tours.
Would look great in a box frame.
