Dick Roughsey bark painting

Painting of ceremony by Dick Roughsey on bark

Object type: Bark painting

Locality: Mornington Island Arnhem Land Northern Territory Australia

Artist: Attributed to Dick Roughsey

Circa: 1970

Length: 70 cm

Description:

Wonderful depiction of a Mornington island Ceremony by an important Australian Artist. Dick Roughsey was the inaugural chairman of the Aboriginal Arts board from 1973 until 1975. His early works on bark are hard to find. This example does have condition problems with a longitudinal crack and loss of pigments as seen in the photo.  It is however also dirt cheap for an original artwork by this artist. The middle panel depicts aboriginal people hunting using Aboriginal Weapons
